We streamlined the interior design a bit to make it more modern, more fun,” says Philadelphia-based, Berman. Known for her use of bold colors and patterns, and an affinity for Mid-Century furnishings, Berman worked with Doron on a plan to create a classic surfer-chic ambience perfect for a family of five that includes three boys under the age of six.

When one of Doron’s best customers “who
always purchased my own personal favorites” mentioned
one day that she was an interior designer,
Doron knew they were drawn to the same colors
and styles. That customer was Philadelphia-based
designer Mona Ross Berman. “I had never used an
interior designer before,” says Doron, “but I knew
that we had the same taste and that I liked her.” Berman
eased Doron into decorating, helping her with
her home in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and some remodeling
of one of her stores. When Doron and her husband
decided to build a beach house on the Jersey Shore
in Strathmere, Doron comissioned Berman to decorate
it “soup to nuts,” Doron explains. “Mona says it
was fun because I let her run with it.”
Outdoor fabric has improved in the last five years in leaps and bounds,” said Chestnut Hill designer Mona Ross Berman, who uses performance fabrics for her clients with children because of its inherent durability and water resistance. “I’ve put it on banquettes in breakfast rooms, on throw pillows on a sofa in a beach house, and even on a bolster pillow in a master bedroom.”

It’s a classic decorating dilemma: A young family with modern design sensibilities falls in love with an oh-so-traditional house. But loving a house and living in it are two different things. Designer Mona Ross Berman needed to find natural ways to marry the classic atmosphere with practical living when her clients (and long-time friends) asked her to renovate their 100-year-old Philadelphia estate.

These high-impact colors are straight from the 1960s. The mantra for the house was ‘sixties California surfer chic.’ I know that’s not a real design genre, but I didn’t want a cliché, the same version of an East Coast beach house you see a lot on the Jersey Shore.
In a summer home you have greater license to have fun, be irreverent. My client, Maureen Doron, took a leap of faith and said, ‘It’s bright, sunny, a little outside the box, let’s do it!’ The ‘surfer’ part is a relaxed, laid-back feeling. The ‘chic’ is taking all those elements and distilling them in a new way.
We elevated color to a kind of fashion-y thing, tailored to Maureen. She owns two high-end women’s clothing stores called Skirt, which carry lines like Milly, Trina Turk, DVF, Tory Burch—all classics with an update. That’s very much in sync with what I like to do in a house—fresh takes on the classics.
